Following are quotes from the Student Conservation Association:

Theyre patriots, in the deepest sense of that word, for they are defending the health of our home ground not the flag, the military, the party in power, or the policies of a given administration, but the land itself, its bounty and beauty, as a living heritage.

They realize that everything we make or do derives from the earth and affects the earth, for better or worse.
