SALUDA—PBS NC made another visit to Saluda Saturday, this time shooting a segment featuring the town’s two 19th-century stores, Thompson’s Store and W.M. Pace General Store. The segment is for “North Carolina Weekend,” a weekly travel and tourism magazine show on the statewide PBS network.
“It’s unusual for a small downtown to have one historic store, much less two,” says PBS NC producer and writer Clay Johnson, who’s a resident of Tryon, “They both have their own individual charm and are fun to explore.”
In addition to getting footage inside and outside both stores Johnson and local videographer Erik Olsen interviewed Thompson’s store manager Lindsay Holmes and her brother Josh, who runs Ward’s Grill, which is attached to the store, as well as a grill customer who was there for lunch during the shoot. They also interviewed the owner of M.A. Pace General Store, Saluda Mayor Tangie Morgan.
“It was truly an honor to be selected for this opportunity, allowing us to share with PBS NC viewers the storied history of the M.A. Pace General Store and our beloved town,” says Morgan. “Thanks to PBS NC for capturing the essence of our town and allowing it to resonate with audiences far and wide.”
“North Carolina Weekend” premieres Thursday nights at 9 p.m. on PBS NC and repeats Friday at 5 p.m., Saturday at 10 a.m., and the following Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The show also streams on the North Carolina Weekend website, YouTube channel, and Facebook page. The show featuring Saluda’s two historic stores is scheduled to premiere on June 20.
