How can anyone compare underwear and bees at the same time, Dear Reader? I don’t know. But….it somehow fits together in this surreal time of dystopia and chaos.

A few days ago, packing mask and water bottle, I headed off with a friend to Lake Lure’s Flowering Bridge. Oh. Yes! Flowers blooming, river flowing smooth and steady, volunteers working (and smiling behind their masks). Eyes smile, you know especially when someone really means it. What a treat….to examine plants, stroll, watch river rippling: water doing what water does, clouds floating, the shade a respite from summer heat.

Admiring a tropical hibiscus blossom, I noted two different species of bees inside ferreting whatever sweetness they could find. The honeybee and the larger bee tangoed around and around, arguing. Finally, one bowed out and took off for parts unknown. Big Bee won. Honeybee still had managed to bag up some pollen in her saddlebags.

Now, I ask you, Dear Reader: how can we not learn from a couple of simple bees? Two different bees, some arguments going on in the flower stamen, yet…both sail out unscathed. Hmmm.

Then, I bought a couple packages of new underwear later that day. Shopping underwear is like standing at the fair’s midway, trying to figure out what prize you want to win. So many to pick from, the odds are not in your favor though.

Once upon-a-time, I’d pick structured underwear that cinched, lifted, enhanced, va-va-voomed, and controlled. That was eons ago when dinosaurs roamed, and now-a-days, it’s simple. Light. Easy. Comfy. No spandex, no over-kill. Just soft gentle cotton works best, no harsh dyes or scratchy stuff with Polyester Pam or Spandex Sue, no excess layers, no hard-core elastic, no extra bells and whistles, nope.

Of course, it’s almost impossible to find simple and plain. I didn’t like the new stuff once it was out of the package, so there will just be holes and wear going on for a while longer with the old stuff. I don’t think those two bees would like it either.

Saluda Historic Depot & Museum is open Thurs.-Sat. 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sun. 1:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. Saluda Train Tales are canceled until September. The Depot is a drop-off for “Books for Good”–a non-profit organization that supports over 90 charities in WNC. Donated books will be sold with proceeds benefiting the Depot & Museum.
