Why we celebrate Memorial Day 

Honoring our troops  

As we enter into this long weekend I want to take the time to remind everyone as to what Memorial Day is really about. 

 

Over the years, this national holiday has become an excuse to go to the lake, crack open a beer and enjoy BBQ with the family. What most of us forget (myself included) is what the holiday is truly about. Memorial Day is an American holiday, that fact alone should generate a sense of pride and unity in every one of us, which honors the American soldiers that have given their lives to preserve our freedom. Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May to honor the men and women who gave their lives serving in all branches and divisions of the United States Military, both past and present. 

 

Memorial Day was originated in the years following the Civil War in the late 1800’s. The Civil War claimed more American lives than any other conflict in our countries history. It was originally known as Decoration Day, before being changed to Memorial Day and officially recognized as a National Holiday in 1971. 

 

A tradition that many citizens don’t know about is there is a moment of remembrance that occurs at 3:00 p.m. local time on every Memorial Day. Citizens spend a moment in silence giving prayer and recognition to our fallen military personnel. If you have not heard of the tradition, I personally challenge you all to honor it this year. 

 

So while we are all enjoying this long weekend, spending time with our friends and families, I hope that each of us can take a moment to remember and honor those that have given their lives serving this country, and to the families that they left behind.
