Doggie Day rescheduled for Sept. 5

Because of weekend rain, the Polk County Recreation’s Doggie Day at Gibson Pool has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 5. The Ending Dog Days of Summer Pool Party will be from 6-8 p.m. at Gibson Pool in Columbus from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday. There is a $2 cost per animal and donations are welcome, with the Doggie Day being a fundraiser for county pool upgrades. All animals must have proof of updated vaccinations in order to participate.

Polk recreation opens registration for volleyball

The Polk County Recreation Department is currently taking applications for fall volleyball. There are three leagues this year for girls between the ages of 7-15. Registration is open until Sept. 15.

Polk commissioners appoint animal cruelty investigators

The Polk County Board of Commissioners appointed seven people as Polk County Animal Cruelty Investigators during the county’s Aug. 21 meeting. Investigators reappointed were Patti Lovelace, Brandon Knox, Stephen King, Margo Savage, Nancy Hasselbring, Ashley Pobanz and Samantha Austin.

Polk Commissioners to hold Tuesday meeting

Due to the Labor Day holiday, the Polk County Board of Commissioners will meet Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. in the R. Jay Foster Hall of Justice, Womack Building, Columbus. The agenda for the meeting is online at

Hurricane Harvey relief collection point in Saluda

Don Mintz Builders at 133 E. Main St. in Saluda will have a trailer in their parking lot over the holiday weekend accepting donations to send to Texas in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. Items needed are personal hygiene, non-perishable food items, baby hygiene, etc.
