Surrounding city and county government agencies are putting plans in place now to prepare for the impending bad weather.

The City of Landrum has street crews looking for road salt, which has sold out in this area, said Landrum City Administrator Caitlin Martin.

“If schools close, city hall will close, too,” Martin said. “Depending on the weather, we may have to cancel our city council meeting on Tuesday (Feb. 11).”

Martin said the police force would operate with the usual officers unless extreme circumstances mandate utilizing more. The police department still has one officer off duty because of a concussion attained in a slip on the ice during the last snowstorm, so officers have pulled extra time to cover his shift.

“We have put special tires on all police vehicles and checked to ensure that each vehicle is equipped with fire extinguishers and first aid kits,” Martin said. “These guys keep working in all the weather conditions.”

The road crews plan to plow, salt and sand in the Town of Columbus, said Jonathan Kanipe, town manager.

“The police will have their regular crew, but we will have people ready to go if we need them,” Kanipe said. “I hope everybody in town is ready.”

Tryon Town Manager Joey Davis said Tryon does not pretreat the town’s roads, as the town does not have the equipment.

The town removes snow by plowing and sanding roads after the snow starts to fall, he said.

Davis said the town’s public works crews would adjust their work hours once they know when the snow is actually going to begin.

Davis said Tryon fire and police were also making preparations on Monday.

“We encourage everyone to make preparations now and stay off the roads once the snow starts,” Davis said. “Citizens are encouraged to follow the town on Facebook, Twitter and the town’s website (www.exploretryon.com) as we will be updating those as conditions warrant.”

Canceled meetings:

Polk County has canceled its planning board meeting on Thursday, Feb. 13. The agenda items will be moved to the March 13 meeting.

The city of Landrum has not made a decision yet about its Tuesday, Feb. 11 meeting but will do so depending on Tuesday conditions.

Tryon Parks Committee meeting rescheduled for March 11, TDDA Vision Casting rescheduled for March 12 and the Tryon ABC Board meeting rescheduled for Feb. 26.

The Tourism Board is still scheduled to meet Tuesday at 5:30 in the McCown Room weather permitting.
