Saluda September police report
• During the month of September 2013, the Saluda Police Department issued five parking citations, one state citations, eight warning tickets, completed two welfare checks, one funeral escort, one road check, discovered one store open, responded to five alarm calls, assisted the Polk County Sheriff’s Office seven times, the N.C. Highway Patrol one time, the Saluda Fire and Rescue one time and received assistance from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office five times and the N.C. Highway Patrol once.

Saluda’s November meeting changed
• The City of Saluda changed its regular city council meeting from Monday, Nov. 11 to Tuesday, Nov. 12 because of Veterans Day. Council made the change during its Oct. 14 meeting. The Nov. 12 meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Saluda Library.

Columbus WWTP rehab set for first of May
• Columbus’ wastewater treatment plant rehabilitation has gotten a lot of accomplished since excessive rain has stopped, according to Columbus officials. Columbus Town Council heard during its Oct. 17 meeting that the concrete has been poured in the new clarifier and contractors are erecting steel. The rehab is scheduled to be completed at the end of April, beginning of May 2014.

Henderson Co. approves agreement to enforce Columbus soil and erosion
• Columbus Town Council heard on Oct. 17 from town manager Jonathan Kanipe that the Henderson County Board of Commissioners approved the agreement with Columbus to enforce the town’s soil and erosion control ordinance. The town is now awaiting approval from the state soil and erosion control board before officially hiring Henderson County to enforce the ordinance.

Columbus Police September report
• During the month of September 2013 the Columbus Police Department answered 387 calls for service including: five calls for wrecks, 14 alarm calls, 56 talk with an officer, one domestic, 25 suspicious vehicles, 20 suspicious persons, 19 fire/EMS assists, one larceny, 12 stranded motorists, five disturbances, three involuntary commitments and one suicide threat.
Officers completed 388 residence checks, 4,786 business checks and 66 church checks. There were 279 total charges issued, including 53 speeding citations, 17 no operator’s license, 13 driving while license revoked, 46 drug charges, 10 uninsured motorists, nine careless and reckless driving and nine open containers. There were 36 arrests, including 12 felony arrests, 24 misdemeanor arrests, 10 driving while impaired and eight fugitives arrested.

Columbus Fire Department September report
• During the month of September 2013, the Columbus Fire Department answered 95 calls for service, including 50 emergency medical calls, nine motor vehicle accidents, seven public service, three vehicle fires, four fire alarms, one aircraft standby, 12 lockouts, two assist law enforcement/department of transportation, one false call, one arcing equipment and five dispatched and cancelled calls.
