The event will kick off with a free breakfast, setting the stage for a day of classic cars, trucks, and motorcycles. Attendees will cast their vote for the People’s Choice Awards in each car show category. To register your own vehicle for the show, visit www.foundationslh.org/tuneup.

Staged under the open-air gymnasium, the health fair will include free screenings, such as blood pressure checks, skin cancer screenings, and lab work, as well as education on a variety of health topics from all of St. Luke’s departments. Men and women who attend will receive a free ball cap or visor and will also be registered for a variety of door prizes donated by local businesses.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, men are less likely to go to the doctor than women and are more likely to skip preventative screenings and engage in risky behaviors. Prolonging healthcare frequently leads to serious health consequences because men are more likely to wait until their symptoms worsen before going to the doctor.

Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic learned through an online survey of approximately 1,174 American men 18 years or older that 72% of men would rather do household chores than go to the doctor, and 20% of men admit they have not been completely honest with their doctor. Only 50% said that they engage in preventative healthcare, and 61% said they would be more likely to go if annual check-ups were more convenient.

Focusing on the benefits of going to the doctor may be the best strategy for getting men to the doctor. This community event was made possible by the Ann Jacob Toms Fund at the Polk County Community Foundation. Join us and enjoy free breakfast, giveaways, door prizes, and health screenings.
