Shakespeare & Friends, a Tryon-based theater group, recently announced it will produce Jason Robert Brown’s musical The Last Five Years in June.

The performance will take place at the Tryon Fine Arts Center Pavilion on June 13, June 14, and June 15 at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, June 16, at 3 p.m..

“This much beloved and award-winning musical, which has been translated into dozens of languages and performed all over the world, is a sure-to-please, sparkling piece of writing with beautifully crafted and catchy songs,” said Director Catherine Gillet. “I am looking forward to directing this piece in the Pavilion at TFAC, which offers many creative possibilities for staging.”

The cast includes the two leads from the Broadway Tour of Pretty Woman, Bethany McDonald and Chase Wolfe.

The Last Five Years, a recipient of a Drama Desk, Lucille Lortel and Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Musical, explores a five-year relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist, and Cathy Hiatt, a struggling actress. An emotionally powerful and intimate musical about two young New Yorkers who fall in and out of love over the course of five years, the show’s unconventional structure consists of Cathy telling her story backwards while Jamie tells his story chronologically.

The inventive musical style draws on a number of genres, including pop, jazz, classical, Klezmer, Latin, Blues, Rock, and Folk.

Tickets for this unique 2-person are available at tryonarts.org or by calling (828) 859-8322.
