SALUDA—Historian Thomas D. “Tom” Perry will be the featured speaker at the next Saluda Train Tales presentation on Friday, May 17.

Perry has written or published over thirty books on regional history, focusing on the Civil War. His latest book is Beyond Mayberry: A Memoir of Andy Griffith and Mount Airy, North Carolina.

Perry was born in Mount Airy and grew up just over the border in Ararat, Patrick County, Va., where Civil War General J.E.B. Stuart, Reverend Bob Childress (“The Man Who Moved A Mountain”), and Orleana Hawks Puckett, the famous midwife on the Blue Ridge Parkway, all lived. Tom is also the author of A Dinky Railroad: The Mount Airy and Eastern Railway.

On May 17, Perry will delve into the fascinating history of the Dinky Railway, a narrow-gauge railroad that ran from Mount Airy, NC, to Kibler Valley, VA. This is a unique opportunity to enrich our understanding of railroad history.

The Saluda Train Tales presentation will begin at 7 p.m., and doors open at 6:30.
