Polk County head golf coach Pat McCool couldn’t have asked for much more Monday.
The young Wolverine golf team qualified three individuals for the state 1A tournament and finished fifth as a team at the 1A West Regional, played at Mountain Harbour Golf Club in Hayesville.
Senior Avery Hardin, freshman Tourin Jackson and junior Myles Menetre each earned a trip to the 1A state tourney, set for May 13-14 at Seven Lakes Golf Club in West End, just outside Pinehurst. Harden tied for sixth overall with a 74, with Jackson tying for eighth with a 77 and Menetre sharing 13th with a 78. The top nine players not on one of the three qualfying teams earned a berth in the state tournament.
“An awesome day,” McCool said. “Tourin and Myles had their best score of the year. We had talked all season about this match was the only one that counted toward qualifying for state.
“I knew it was going to be an awesome day when they made the turn.”
Polk County finished with a team score of 339, with Piercen Edwards carding a 110 and David Duffy adding a 125.
Mitchell won the team title with a score of 301, easily topping runner-up Mountain Island Charter (319). Cherryville earned the final team qualifier spot with a 320, with Christ the King fourth at 327.
Two-time defending state champion Connor Warren of Mitchell won the regional title with a 4-under par 68.
