Polk to open 1A baseball playoffs at South Stanly

Polk County will travel to South Stanly on Tuesday to open the state 1A baseball playoffs per brackets released Monday by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.

The Wolverines (10-13) received the 18th seed in the 1A West Regional and will journey to Norwood to face the 15th-seeded Rebel Bulls.

South Stanly finished 12-9 this season, tying for second in the Yadkin Valley 2A/1A Conference. The Bulls are led by juniors John Crump (.508, 22 RBI), Tyler Kimrey (.400) and Braylon Tyson (.367).

Tyson and freshman Jarrett Hinson have been the team’s primary starters this season, with Hinson owning a 4-1 record with 41 strikeouts in 32 2/3 innings. Tyson is 1-3, but fanned 39 in 38 innings and has a 3.50 earned-run average.

The winner of Tuesday’s game will advance to face the winner of the No. 2 Uwharrie Charter-No. 31 Bradford Prep game.
