Polk County’s boys tennis team lives on to compete another day.

The Wolverines (4-6) received the ninth seed in the 1A West playoff bracket and will travel next Monday to Gray Stone Day for their opening playoff match.

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association confirmed Monday that Polk County teams will earn a playoff berth and be seeded as a conference champion if they either finish with a .500 record or at least a third-place conference finish. The NCHSAA had originally said teams had to be in the top two.

Polk County finished third in the Mountain Foothills 7 Conference, and that earned the Wolverines a playoff berth. Polk would not have qualified as a wild card based on its RPI.

Gray Stone Day finished 4-7 in the Yadkin Valley 1A/2A Conference, but placed third out of three teams and thus earned a playoff position in a similar manner as Polk County. The Knights feature a roster entirely comprised of juniors, with Lucas Maynor the seed and No. 5 singles player Maxwell Foote boasting an 8-3 record.

The winner of Monday’s match will advance to face either No. 1 Elkin or No. 16 Christ The King.
