TRYON—Tryon Presbyterian Church will host a performance by The Voices of Appalachia choir of Alice Lloyd College at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 6. 

The free concert was arranged by TPC member Richard Kennedy, who once directed the choir. Mindy Rubin is the current director.

Alice Lloyd College, in Pippa Passes, Ky., is named for its founder, Alice Spencer Geddes Lloyd, a writer, social worker and educator.

The Voices of Appalachia choir was formed in 1962. Over the years, it has performed at notable sites such as the Ahwahne Hotel at Yosemite National Park in California, the National Presbyterian Church and the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., and Gettysburg National Military Park. The choir strives to convey mountain people’s deep feelings about their heritage and region through hymns and ballads of the Southern Appalachians.

On the 2024 spring tour, in addition to traditional folk music and hymns, the choir will perform songs reflecting Alice Lloyd College’s centennial anniversary.

Dr. Rubin, the director, earned a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Violin Performance from The University of South Carolina and her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Manhattan School of Music. She has performed with some of the finest conductors and orchestras throughout Europe including concerts in Berlin, Hamburg, Milan and Helsinki, and in the United States at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the White House. In 1995, she was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to Finland. She holds two positions at Alice Lloyd, associate professor of music and communication studies.

While in Tryon, choir members will stay with TPC host families. The church is located at 430 Harmon Field Road.
