Polk County’s volleyball team has been named a finalist for the 2024 WNC Sports Awards Banquet, which will be held on May 19 at Grove Park Inn in Asheville.
The 2023 1A state champions are nominated for the Homewood Suites Division II Female Team Major Sport. Other nominees include Brevard volleyball, Cherokee basketball, East Rutherford basketball, and Mountain Heritage basketball.
Area coaches and athletic directors received nomination forms in March. The awards finalists were selected from those nominations.
The 62nd annual banquet, conducted by the Mountain Amateur Athletic Club, will recognize the top athletes and teams in Western North Carolina. The event includes 24 awards, 18 scholarships, the Riley Howell Courage Award, and a Special Olympics Scholarship.
Members of the public can attend the event. Tickets are $45 and can be purchased at wncsportsawards.org.
