A day after knocking off the second-place team in the Mountain Foothills 7 Conference, Polk County looked poised to take down the league leader.

The Wolverines led R-S Central after four innings and remained tied with the Hilltoppers after five in the matchup at Polk County. But R-S pushed across four runs in the top of the sixth and went on to claim a 9-4 victory in the conference clash.

The Hilltoppers (9-4, 6-1) opened the day with a three-run first-inning rally. But Polk County (6-7, 2-6) fought back with a four-run third inning to seize the lead.

Aslyn Scruggs walked to open the third, with Mia Bradley lacing a single and Chloe Young reaching on an infield error to load the bases. Sarah Vitale then drilled a single to score Young and Bradley, and subsequent base hits by Miya Jackson, Junie Mitchell and Laney Littlefield helped push the Wolverines into the lead.

A walk and error helped R-S score its tying run in the fifth. The Hilltoppers then grabbed the lead in the sixth with a four-run inning highlighted by back-to-back doubles from Lillie Beheler and Madelyn Hasty, each sending drives to the fence.

Vitale, Bradley, Mitchell and Miya Jackson each finished 2-for-4 for Polk County, with Littlefield adding a base hit.

Polk County is set to host East Henderson on Thursday for a doubleheader, the two five-inning games beginning at 4:30 p.m.
