POLK COUNTY—The Unity in the Community organization recently sponsored its third annual Arbor Day tree planting campaign. Its goal is to encourage Polk County residents to plant trees and be mindful of their many benefits and how important they are to our livelihoods.  

Every year, the organization has partnered with Mrs. Andrea Walters and her 5th-grade science class at Polk Central Elementary School as they bring the project to life within the classroom. Unity in the Community, a non-profit organization, purchased black walnut, chestnut oak, white pine and white oak seedlings to be given away to Polk County residents. Polk County High School’s Unity Club, Polk County High Ag Department and Columbus Tractor Supply also partnered in this year’s projects. 

Over 800 trees were distributed during the Arbor Day tree giveaway at Tractor Supply in Columbus on March 16 to be planted in observance of Arbor Day. North Carolina’s Arbor Day observance was on March 22, and National Arbor Day is on Friday, April 26.
