A nightmare seventh inning Thursday spoiled Polk County’s hopes for a win over its border rival.

Landrum pushed across seven runs in the seventh, pulling away to take an 8-1 victory over the Wolverines in a non-conference meeting at Polk.

The Cardinals improved to 2-1 with the win while the Wolverines dropped to 5-5.

Landrum pushed across a run in the top of the first, but Polk answered in the bottom of the second to even the game as Laney Littlefield drew a one-out walk and scored on Miya Jackson’s two-out double.

The game remained tied until the final inning, when the Cardinals put together their rally, sending 11 batters to the plate, banging out six hits and taking advantage of a handful of Polk defensive lapses.

The runs were more than enough for Landrum pitcher Sydney Price, who struck out 11 and allowed four hits in the victory.

Chloe Young had two of those four Wolverines hits, with Littlefield and Jackson delivering the other two.

Polk County is next in action on April 9, hosting R-S Central for a Mountain Foothills 7 Conference matchup.
