TRYON–Sadie Hudson McKaig, age 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on March 19, 2024.  

She was born March 13, 1939, in Tryon, North Carolina and was the daughter of the late Karen Covil Hudson and the late Ted Hudson. Her brother Rudy Hudson preceded her in death.

Sadie was a graduate of Tryon High School and attended Berea College. In her early adult life, she moved to Texas City, Texas where she worked for Union Carbide. When she returned to Tryon, her many accomplishments included being on the Children’s Theatre Festival Board, a member of the Tryon Dance Guild, and a Board member of the Tryon Youth Center. She was Co-Founder of Tuesday School, a preschool for children in Tryon. A famous artist in Tryon, Charles Quest, created many art pieces that are displayed in museums across the country with Sadie as his model.

She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Tryon. She loved her church as evidenced by her active involvement in the choir, handbell ensemble, and various committees that supported the work of the church. She served as the first female elected to be Chairman of the Board of Deacons. Her community involvement continued as she actively volunteered at Tryon Elementary for many years.

Sadie is survived by her husband, Franklin McKaig with whom she was married for 64 years.  Also surviving are her two children Eric McKaig and daughter in law Rochelle of Boiling Springs, SC and Leah McKaig of Flat Rock, NC; granddaughters, Kasey McKaig of Radford, Virginia and Madison McKaig of Christenburg, Virginia; and she was Grandmommy to Gabriel, Isabella, Rory, Griffin, Hannah, Eden, and Haley. Surviving is her sister-in-law, Janet Hudson, and her longtime and devoted best friend in life, Alice Tennant.

A celebration of life will be held March 23, 2024, at 2:00 PM in the First Baptist Church of Tryon with Dr. Jeff Harris officiating.

A reception will follow the service in the Gathering Space at First Baptist Church.
