Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

You win some and you lose some in duplicate bridge, but some partnerships seem to win more than others.

Andrea Kahn and Chip Boyle, for instance, are headed to the North American Bridge Championships in Louisville, KY, next week to take on the best players in the world for the title of 2024 North American Pairs champions. To secure an invitation, they had to qualify in local competition, and then win against a crowded field of regional pairs at a tournament in Charlotte.

They polish their skills regularly by playing in American Contract Bridge League games in Tryon and Saluda, where the competition, while friendly, can also be fierce. It’s rare, in fact, for any pair to win two sessions in a row, but for the first time since the pandemic, one pair has put together a three-game streak.

Linda Watts and Carolyn Jones have won the last three weeks at the Saluda Mountain Club, which runs an ACBL-sanctioned game every Monday afternoon at the Saluda Senior Center on Greenville Street. (Linda and Carolyn will try to make it four in a row on March 18.)

Other sanctioned games are offered Thursdays and Fridays by the Foothills Bridge Club at the Tryon Congregational Church on Melrose Avenue. For more information, drop a note to Bill at matchcar4@gmail.com.
