First held in 2005, the event raises funds for operating expenses, training and treatment protocols in Landrum and its surrounding areas.

“Many people have the misconception that, like our fire and law enforcement counterparts, we are government-funded,” said organizer Marcus Armstrong of Landrum Rescue Squad. “This is not true; we are an independent organization that provides a public service in the form of 911 EMS and have done so since 1969, thanks in large part to the generous donations of those we lovingly get to serve.”

Armstrong explained local government does help with some funding, but it is nowhere near enough to cover the rescue squad’s expenses.

“Spartanburg County does cover our fuel expenses and the City of Landrum gives a donation annually. We are incredibly grateful for Spartanburg County and the City of Landrum, but this covers a small portion of our operating expenses. Our organization operates on an annual budget of around $100,000 a year depending on call volume and donations,” he said.

“The fact is, we consider it miraculous to be able to operate on such a budget. It is our hope and prayer that we are able to continue to provide this much-needed service for years to come at the highest levels possible.”

BBQ plates at the fundraiser will be $12 each, and BBQ sandwiches will be $6.50. BBQ will also be sold at $30 per pound, and a pint of beans or slaw will cost $6. BBQ plates will include chopped BBQ with a bun, slaw, baked beans, a choice of sauce, and a beverage. Desserts will also be sold.

The Landrum Rescue Squad BBQ will be held at the Landrum Rescue Squad building, located at 300 W. Coleman St. in Landrum, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Only cash, Venmo or checks will be accepted.
