Polk County opened its boys tennis season this week with a pair of close home losses.

The Wolverines dropped a 6-2 decision on Monday to defending Mountain Foothills 7 Conference champion R-S Central. Gardner-Webb signee Billy Mac Clement helped power the Hilltoppers to victory in the Wolverines’ opener, with Polk’s Charlie Jackson and David Amitrano scoring wins in singles to account for Polk’s two team points.

Polk then stepped out of conference play on Tuesday to host Madison. The Patriots split the day’s singles matches and won the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to secure the team win.

Banks Barber, Riley Ballentine and Amitrano accounted for Polk’s singles points, with Barber and Ballentine then teaming to defeat Madison’s top doubles team of Ari Feiler and Spencer Parker, taking an 8-6 victory just before darkness halted the match.

The Wolverines are scheduled to be back in action Wednesday, traveling to Patton for a conference clash.
