LANDRUM—A one-time infrastructure grant is helping Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System expand medical services in Landrum to care for a growing patient population.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services awarded $3 million to help fund the expansion and renovation of Medical Group of the Carolinas – Family Medicine – Landrum. The practice has been operating at maximum capacity for the past five years, and the surrounding population is expected to grow by 5% over the next five years. Currently, the facility has 15 patient rooms and four providers. The project will add nine patient rooms, three patient exam rooms with a telehealth room, an additional nurses’ work area, restrooms, waiting areas and a reception room.

“The state’s investment in this community will help Spartanburg Regional provide essential medical services in a growing part of the Upstate,” said Dr. Chuck Morrow, executive vice president for Spartanburg Regional. “With this funding, we will be able to welcome new patients into this practice and expand services, while also creating an opportunity to recruit more physicians to Landrum.”

The funding is one of 26 grants awarded by the state totaling $48.2 million that improve access to quality medical care. Launched in October 2023, the grant program provides one-time infrastructure funds to create or improve facilities in rural or medically underserved areas.

“This grant program is a great example of how public-private partnerships can leverage funding and support innovative ways to meet the healthcare needs of our citizens,” said SCDHHS Director Robert Kerr. “From investing in brick-and-mortar facilities to extending access to care through new technologies and telehealth, this funding will help improve access to both primary and specialty care in our communities that experience some of the greatest health challenges in our state. We appreciate the innovative solutions brought forth by our grant applicants and the support the General Assembly and Governor McMaster have entrusted in SCDHHS to help improve health outcomes in our state.”
