Polk thumps Asheville in softball season opener

Polk County scored ten runs in its first at-bat Monday, opening the 2024 softball season with a 17-2 non-conference victory at Asheville.

The Wolverines ended the game after three innings by run rule, building a 17-0 lead before the Cougars pushed across two runs in the bottom of the third.

Chloe Young finished 2-for-2 with a double, triple and three RBI, with Elizabeth Vitale going 2-for-3 with a double, triple and four RBI. Kylee Waters was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI.

Junie Mitchell had a two-run double, with Sarah Vitale, Laney Littlefield, Miya Jackson, Taylor Lancaster and Aslyn Scruggs each adding a hit. Scruggs and Rosie LaFauci each added an RBI.

Sarah Vitale struck out five in earning the win on the mound.

Polk County returns to action on Friday, traveling to East Henderson for another non-conference matchup.
