Polk Middle dominates Science Olympiad Regional Competition

Polk County Middle School’s Science Olympiad team left the Asheville Tournament with a new problem to tackle.

PCMS swept all of the team awards at the regional competition at UNC Asheville on February 10, winning the varsity team competition, the junior varsity team competition and the Spirit Award, given to one team that has a positive attitude, exemplifies teamwork, has respect for the rules and their fellow competitors and exhibits sportsmanlike conduct.

Polk Middle topped Montford North Star Academy by five points to secure its second consecutive Asheville Tournament title and earn a trip to the North Carolina Science Olympiad, set for April 12-13 at North Carolina State University. It will be the sixth straight regional from which Polk Middle has qualified for the state event.

The Polk Middle junior varsity defeated Montford North Star Academy and Foothills Community School to win its division.

Science Olympiad offers students a chance to compete in 18 team events, some involving subject tests, some involving building devices, some involving both. Polk Middle’s varsity took top honors in 10 of the 18 events, with the junior varsity winning nine of its 18 competitions.
