Five Wolverine wrestlers set to chase state 1A titles

Five Polk County wrestlers will begin their quest Friday for a state 1A wrestling championship.

The NCHSAA State Championships kick off Thursday at the Greensboro Coliseum, but the 1A portion of the event does not begin until Friday afternoon. Quarterfinal action is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., with the semifinals set for Friday at 6 p.m.

Consolation rounds will begin Saturday at 9 a.m., with the championship round for all classes scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m.

The five Polk County participants represent the most state qualifiers since 2020 and matches the second-most in school history.

Those scheduled to wrestle Friday include:

 

  • 113: Freshman Brody Wolfe (29-16) enters as the fourth seed from the West and will face East Regional champion Colton Lewis (46-5) of North East Carolina Prep School.
  • 120: Sophomore Amon Villarreal (41-10) enters as the third seed from the West and will face East No. 2 seed Christian Harris (30-4) of Albemarle.
  • 157: Freshman Styler Blackwell (28-11) enters as third seed from the West and will face East No. 2 seed Eriberto Torres (45-3) of Thomasville.
  • 175: Sophomore Zalen McCraw (43-8) enters as the No. 2 seed from the West and will face East No. 3 seed Caden Bond (43-9) of Uwharrie Charter.
  • 215: Senior Jadyn Virgil (39-3) enters as the West Regional champion and will face East No. 4 seed Maddox Carson (26-9) of Eastern Randolph.
