Polk County moved into a tie for second place in the Mountain Foothills 7 Conference, upending Hendersonville 36-32 on Tuesday in girls basketball action in Hendersonville.

Both teams ended the night with identical 12-7 overall, 6-2 conference records. The Wolverines earned a split of the season series with the win.

A back-and-forth first half ended with Polk County holding a 17-15 lead. The Bearcats took a 20-19 lead with 5:20 left in the third quarter, but Bailey Staton’s 11 points in the quarter sparked a Polk run that eventually gave the Wolverines a 33-22 lead with 4:40 remaining in the final period.

But Hendersonville responded with its own surge, cutting the deficit to 33-30 with two minutes remaining. Charley Dusenbury worked free for a layup with 1:53 remaining to make it 35-30, but the Bearcats answered with a bucket to again trail by just three.

But Polk’s defense kept Hendersonville off the scoreboard the rest of the way, and Mia Bradley hit a free throw with 7.9 seconds left to seal the win.

Staton had 18 points to lead Polk County. Kiera Littlejohn had eight points and 10 rebounds, with Kylie Lewis scoring seven points with nine rebounds. Jayden Duncan grabbed six rebounds for the Wolverines.

Dusenbury finished with two points and Bradley had one for Polk.

The Wolverines return to the court on Friday, traveling to R-S Central for another league matchup.
