TRYON—Former Polk County Schools Assistant Superintendent Dave Scherping will serve the rest of the 2023-24 school year as the interim principal of Tryon Elementary School.

Superintendent Aaron Greene announced Monday that current principal Mark Robertson is resigning effective immediately due to a health issue. Robertson was also an interim principal, joining the Tryon faculty in October following the retirement of Dr. Cari Maneen.

“I want to thank Mr. Robertson for his service and I know we all wish him the best,” Greene said. “We are fortunate to have Mr. Scherping in the role as he knows our students, staff, families and district, and will be able to hit the ground running.

“Mr. Scherping’s first day will be Wednesday of this week, and I am confident he will do well leading Tryon Elementary forward.”

Scherping retired in October 2022 following a 30-year career in which he handled a multitude of roles for the district. He joined Polk County Schools in 1993 as a teacher, then left the classroom in 1999 to become a computer technician for the district.

That eventually led to his overseeing technology across the district and expanded roles in testing, building management and nearly anything else a superintendent could assign. He closed his career as Assistant Superintendent.
