Polk County made a bit of history Saturday before falling in the second round of the 1A Dual Team Wrestling State Championships in Sparta.
The Wolverines opened playoff action at Alleghany High School with a 60-24 victory over Rosman. It marked the first postseason duals win for Polk County since 2009.
Polk then wrestled the host Trojans in a second-round match. Alleghany built a 33-12 lead, only to see the Wolverines rally to within 33-30. But Alleghany earned a win in the final match of the evening to secure the team’s triumph.
Polk County ends its season with a 16-7 record, the most wins for the program since the 2010-11 season.
Wolverine wrestlers will next take part in the 1A West Regional individual tourney, set for Feb. 9-10 in Robbinsville.
