Mountain Heritage currently sits atop the NCHSAA MaxPreps 1A West girls basketball rankings.
With good reason, as Polk County discovered Friday.
The Cougars took command early of the championship game of the Knights 11th Annual Christmas Tournament, steaming to a 72-39 victory over the Wolverines at North Henderson High School.
Illness affected several Polk County (6-5) players, but a healthy Wolverine squad would still have been challenged by the Cougars (9-2), who put together an 11-0 run midway through the first quarter, led 20-7 at the end of the period and never let the margin dip below double digits.
Kiera Littlejohn led Polk County with 11 points, with Kylie Lewis adding 10 points and Bailey Staton scoring nine. Mia Bradley finished with seven points while Jayden Duncan added two.
Polk will have a few days to rest and recover before hosting Hendersonville on Friday for a Mountain Foothills 7 Conference game.
