Fury sound late to topple Wolverines in Knights tourney

Fountain Inn pulled away in the second half Wednesday to hand Polk County a 73-34 setback in the opening round of the Knights 11th Annual Christmas Tournament at North Henderson.

The Wolverines (1-8) move into Thursday’s consolation round, where they’ll face Pickens (S.C.) at 1:30 p.m. The Blue Flame (3-8) dropped a 61-35 decision to East Henderson in their tourney debut.

Fountain Inn (9-4) built a 39-22 halftime lead. Polk cut the lead to 12 at one point before the Fury defense checked the Wolverines the rest of the way. Fountain Inn had nine 3-pointers during the afternoon to help fuel the win.

Lawson Carter had 11 points to lead Polk County, with Aaron Jackson adding eight and Antonio Simpson scoring seven. Avery Harden and Gunnar Alm each added four points.

In other first-round games, North Henderson defeated R-S Central 64-53 and Travelers Rest (S.C.) downed Mountain Heritage 65-51.
