The Green Blades Garden Club nominated Donna Younkin for induction into the Second Wind Hall of Fame. The Board accepted and she was presented her certificate at The Green Blade’s Christmas Luncheon at the Green River Plantation on December 14, by Second Wind board member Liz Norstrom.
Younkin has served the Green Blades as program chairman from the first day she attended a meeting. She has never said no to any organization she has volunteered for. In the short time she has been in our community she has become a valuable board member of The Green Blades, participating in many of their civic projects, which include maintaining the “Park on Trade” in downtown Tryon, decorating the Tryon Fine Arts Center for the holidays, and this year, providing holiday arrangements for all of the patient rooms at St Luke’s Hospital. She is a board member of the Tryon Riding and Hunt Club, chairing many of their projects during the year, and is part of a leadership team for the “Gardening for Life Project,” an all-volunteer group working to preserve and protect biodiversity in our area. Donna’s work ethic is beyond the norm.
Donna and her husband, Clyde, moved here from New Jersey where she was on the board of the Horse Park of New Jersey and worked for the state as head of the State Adoption and Foster Care Division, ending her career with an emphasis on combating human trafficking. Donna has an undergraduate degree in social work from Stockton State College, and a graduate degree in public administration from New York University.
The mission of Second Wind is to identify those outstanding volunteers who contribute so much to the quality of life in our community and to provide recognition of retirees sixty years and over who have had a useful and productive life continuing beyond retirement, while others paused to rest. They caught a second wind and began a new career of service to the community and mankind. Second Wind Hall of Fame is a 501(c)(3) organization and welcomes nominations for inductions. Requests for nomination forms may be sent to carolbrowning72@gmail.com.
