GIRLS BASKETBALL: Wolverines subdue Panthers in conference opener

Polk County roared into its Mountain Foothills 7 Conference schedule on Friday, downing Patton 56-27 in a girls matchup in Morganton.

The Wolverines improved to 3-3 overall, 1-0 in league play. The Panthers are now 1-8, 0-1.

Polk County wasted no time in taking command of the game, building a 19-8 advantage by the end of the first period. A Mia Bradley 3-pointer highlighted a 7-0 Wolverine run in the quarter.

Bailey Staton opened the second period with a three-point play, boosting the Wolverine lead to 22-8, and Polk never led by less than double digits the rest of the game.

Staton finished with 24 points to lead Polk County, with Kiera Littlejohn scoring eight and Charley Dusenbury adding seven. Littlejohn also finished with 13 rebounds.

Bradley and Brianna Gray each scored five points while Jayden Duncan finished with four and Kylie Lewis added three. Bradley led the Polk defense with six steals.

Polk County travels Monday to Landrum for a non-conference matchup.
