BOYS BASKETBALL: Landrum checks Polk in Thermal Belt battle

Landrum placed four players in double figures Friday and steadily pulled away from Polk County, handing the Wolverines an 80-41 setback in boys basketball action at Polk.

The Cardinals (6-2) closed the first quarter with a 14-2 run and never led by less than double digits the rest of the evening. Landrum’s defense and rebounding often limited Polk County (1-4) to a single shot each possession, allowing the Cardinals to build its margin throughout the night.

Landrum built a 35-20 lead at halftime, then cranked up its offense in the third period, scoring often in transition while racing to 29 points in the period and a 64-32 lead by the quarter’s end.

Mario Gonzalez led the Cardinals with 17 points, with Franklin Davis adding 15, Benett Edwards scoring 13 and AJ Lindsey finishing with 11.

Gunnar Alm scored Polk County’s first 11 points and finished with 18. Aaron Jackson added eight points, with Antonio Simpson and Avery Harden each scoring five points.

Damon Williams had three points and Nolan Simpson added one for the Wolverines.

Polk County opens Mountain Foothills 7 Conference play on Friday, traveling to Patton.
