A scoreless spell of more than a quarter Friday hampered Polk County as the Wolverines dropped a 61-37 decision at Avery in the varsity girls basketball season opener for both teams.

The Wolverines trailed just 13-12 after a Bailey Staton free throw early in the second period and still were down just 16-13 following a Kylie Lewis foul shot with 6:14 left in the quarter.

But Avery held Polk County scoreless at that point until 3:54 remained in the third quarter when Kiera Littlejohn hit a free throw. The Vikings put together an 18-0 run in that span to take command of the game.

Polk County got no closer than 16 points the rest of the way.

Staton led the Wolverines with 21 points, with Lewis adding six and Charley Dusenbury scoring five. Littlejohn had three points, with Cate Brown scoring two.

The two teams were set to meet again Tuesday at Polk County in the Wolverines’ home opener.
