Huskey qualifies for 1A state cross country meet, breaks 20-minute mark

Polk County junior Karsyn Huskey earned a state championship trip Saturday and etched her name into the Wolverine cross country record book.

Huskey ran to an eighth-place finish in the 1A West Regional cross country meet in Bryson City, her time of 19:40.58 qualifying her for a berth in next week’s state 1A championship meet in Kernersville.

Huskey also became just the seventh female runner in Polk County history to record a time under 20 minutes, joining Karen Godlock, Jennifer Dimsdale, Elisabeth Elliott, Jenny McGrane, India Godlock and Olivia Overholt.

Cherokee’s Dvdaya Swimmer, who later in the day played in the state volleyball quarterfinals at Polk County, won the regional title with a time of 17:55.37.

Charlie Keller finished in a time of 27:39.82 and Kendra Kitchen came home in 30:11.81 for the Wolverines.

Davis Young placed 21st with a time of 17:27.32 to lead Polk County’s boys, who placed 14th in the team competition. Philip Teague took 65th in 19;05.95, with Jordy Rojas-Argate in 80th at 19:45.91. Kingston White (22:23.49), Jayln Thomas (22:27.06), Cannon Iamurri (23:05.11) and Austin Shipman (24:58.52) rounded out the times for Polk County.

Blake Nicholson of Christ The King won the individual regional title with a time of 15:03.29.

Swain won both the West Regional boys and girls titles.
