A widespread freeze is forecasted across the foothills, with a possible low of 27 degrees predicted for Wednesday.

Residents in Polk County and northern Spartanburg County should take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.

The shift from summer-like temps to sub-freezing temperatures will be abrupt, as Monday saw highs in the low 80s.

The average date for the first freeze in Tryon is November 3, according to NC State Extension Gardening’s website.
