The proclamation was first proposed on August 14, and reads that the city “expresses the deep appreciation on behalf of the citizens of Saluda, and Polk County, NC, for the 2023 Coon Dog Day Festival.” The proclamation also recognizes Greene’s “time and talents to the service of Polk County and the City of Saluda.”

Saluda Commissioner Paul Marion presented the award to Greene in the gymnasium at Saluda Elementary School on Monday, October 16.

“We feel very, very special to have Mr. Aaron Greene participate in Coon Dog Day,” Sauda Commissioner Paul Marion said at the ceremony.

“I want to offer my appreciation to Mr. Marion and the City of Saluda for awarding me this honorary title,” said Greene. “Saluda is a wonderful place, filled with community members who are always stepping up to help our students and schools, and each other. The time and effort given in my role in Coon Dog Day was more than compensated by the donations and funds that were raised for Saluda Elementary.

“There are so many other deserving folks who help out, so I am officially sharing my ‘royal status’ with all the volunteers and community members who make Coon Dog Day the special event it is each year. When communities come together in support of their students and town, everyone benefits. I was honored to be a small part.”

Aaron Greene has served as Polk County Schools Superintendent for eight years and was named the Western Region 2022-23 Superintendent of the Year by the Western Region Education Service Alliance.
