Tryon Country Club held its annual Men’s Club Championships on October 14 and 15. The course was in excellent condition, the greens were fast, and the weather was perfect on Saturday. On Sunday, the temperature dropped and the wind picked up which made very difficult playing conditions.

In the Men’s Senior Division, the day 1 leader was Keith Beaver with an excellent round of 74. Steve Walker was in second with Vic Ketchman and Brad Rakow tied for third. On Sunday, Steve Walker made a valiant run at taking the lead but fell short. He still had the best round of the day with a 76. Steady Keith Beaver held on to win his first Tryon CC Men’s Senior Club Championship. Steve Walker won the “Net” title. Brad Rakow finished second in the Gross and Tom Murdoch finished second in the Net.

Playing from the back tees and vying for the Men’s Club Championship title, Mario Mason, the defending champion, shot an impressive 74 on day one to take the lead. Simon Behan was in second while Travis Aldred was in third place. On Sunday, Mario got off to a great start but could not hang on as Simon came from behind to take the title. This was Simon’s second title in three years. Mario finished in second place. In the “Net” division, Brandon Umlauf came in 1st place, with Jeremy Yoder finishing second.

The Tryon Country Club Men’s Golf Association played an individual low net event and had closest-to-the-pin contests on both par 3s on October 16. The weather was cool and windy, and the greens were quick, so the scores were higher than normal. The results are listed below:

1st place – Ed Weatherby – 35

2nd place – Bill Kelly – 36

3rd place – Bill Basye – 37

4th place – Jack Saunders – 38

5th place – (Tie) – Jerry Perry, Jerry Pospisil, John Schickling, Tom Bolling, Vic Ketchman, Mike Bates, Rody Dayvault – all with 38 (Lost Scorecard Playoff)

#3 – (G/B) – Roger Dehnel – 9’ 7 ½B

#3 – (Forward Tees) – Bill Basye – 7’ 4”

#8 – (G/B) – Keith Beaver – 3’ 4 ½”

The Tryon Country Club Women’s Golf Association played a 1 Best Ball of 4 format along with a “Low Putts” contest on October 17. The weather was cool to begin but warmed up nicely. The scores were low. The results were as follows:

 

1st place – Nancy Mahler, Claudia Law, Stephanie Demeranville, Peggy Henson – 30

2nd place – Marge Avery, Kathy Clark, Becky Kennedy, Heidi Shull – 31

Low Putts:

1st place – Diane Torres – 14

2nd place – (Tie) – Becky Kennedy & Mary Lou Diekmann – 17
