Polk County earned the fourth seed in the 1A West bracket and will host Elkin in the opening round of the state dual team girls tennis playoffs.

The Wolverines (9-2) will face the Buckin’ Elks (7-6) on Monday at 4 p.m. on the Polk County High School courts.

The berth in the state dual team playoffs is the first for Polk County since 2019. The Wolverines will be looking for their first postseason win since reaching the third round of the 1A playoffs in 2017.

Elkin’s six losses include two each to 1A West top seed Mount Airy (20-0) and East Wilkes squad (14-3), both Northwest 1A Conference rivals.

The Buckin’ Elks feature a lineup dominated by sophomores and freshmen. That includes No. 1 singles player Ella Kleinheksel, a sophomore who earned all-conference honors last season.

Sophomore Elissa Dickerson owns an 8-3 mark at No. 3 singles while freshman Jocelyn Johnson has posted a 10-3 record at No. 4 singles and is 8-3 in doubles play. Freshman Molly Adams has a 6-1 record at No. 6 singles and 7-6 overall.

Senior Kendall Eads (No. 2) and sophomore Diana Rodriguez Gonzalez round out the likely starting lineup.

The winner of the opening-round match will face the winner of the No. 5 Bishop McGuinness-No. 12 North Stokes match. Polk County would host that match on Wednesday, Oct. 25 if the Wolverines advance.
