A sudden flurry of goals Wednesday proved the deciding factor in Polk County’s favor at R-S Central.

After more than 60 minutes of scoreless play, the two Mountain Foothills 7 Conference rivals combined for three goals in less than four minutes. The Wolverines scored the last of those, the decider in Polk’s 2-1 conference victory.

Polk County (7-7-2, 4-5) broke the scoreless tie with 29:07 left in the match. Harrison Ashworth gained possession of the ball on the R-S Central end of the field, moved toward the goal and pushed forward a pass to Thomas Varnadore deep in the penalty area.

Varnadore slightly redirected the ball to his right to an unmarked Sebastian Azar, who hit a low rolling shot just inside the far post to give the Wolverines a 1-0 edge.

That lead lasted 37 seconds. R-S Central’s Riley Coldren worked free on the opposite end of the field and struck a high drive from some 20 yards out just out of the reach of Polk goalkeeper Cade Bright, evening the score.

That tie lasted three minutes. Polk’s Nate Martinez found himself just inside R-S Central territory with the ball and open space. He dribbled forward and played a pass down the right flank to Azar.

With the R-S Central goalkeeper rushing out to stop another Azar shot, the forward instead centered a pass to Varnadore, who held off a defender with a sliding shot from the top of the goal area that easily found the net for what proved to be the game-winner.

The Hilltoppers dropped to 2-9-2, 1-8 with the loss.

Polk County will next return to the pitch on Wednesday, traveling to Chase for a conference clash that will begin at 4:45 p.m. The match is slated to be shown live on NFHS Network.
