Columbus—Coach Jerry Hensley passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2023.  He was born in Polk County on December 1, 1946. Jerry was the son of Clyde and Ruth Hensley. He was married to a golf ball, basketball, baseball, softball and football. He was a retired principal, teacher and coach of Polk County Schools.

He began his career as an 8th grade teacher at Stearns Elementary. Later he also taught chemistry and biology at PCHS. He became a principal at Sunny View Elementary. Jerry coached many different sports over the years and even helped after he retired. He loved his players, students, and teachers. Jerry was also a world traveler. 

Surviving is his sister, Linda Hardin (Donald Ray); a niece, Paula Steele (Dan); nephew, Clay Hardin (Eliza); 4 great nephews;2 great nieces; two aunts, Joyce Riddle (Carrol) and Barbara Eichenberger (Danny)and one uncle, Stokes Sheehan (Carolyn).

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Sandy Plains ARP Church Cemetery with Rev. Phillip Gschwend officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Polk County School softball team by making out a check to: Polk Schools Fund, Re: Polk County Middle School Softball Team.  Checks may be mailed to Polk County Community Foundation, 255 South Trade Street, Tryon, NC 28782.
