Monday felt all too familiar for Polk County’s boys soccer team.
The Wolverines dropped a 3-1 decision to Hendersonville at Dietz Field, the road Mountain Foothills 7 Conference setback following a pattern similar to last week’s 3-1 home loss to Patton.
Hendersonville (10-4-1, 7-1) struck twice in a two-minute span midway through the first half, building a 2-0 advantage that held until halftime. That echoed Patton’s two-goal barrage in four first-half minutes in last week’s loss.
But just as they did last week, the Wolverines (6-7-2, 3-5) struck first in the second half, scoring in the 63rd minute. Harrison Ashworth flicked a pass into the penalty area that Thomas Varnadore pushed into free space, then outraced the Hendersonville goalkeeper and poked the ball just inside the left post, trimming the Bearcat lead to 2-1.
Unfortunately for the Wolverines, Hendersonville quickly pushed the margin back to two goals, with Will Shealy collecting a redirected pass and pushing it into the net less than two minutes after Varnadore’s goal.
The Bearcats then kept Polk County off the scoreboard the rest of the evening.
Polk County will return to action Wednesday, continuing a four-match road trip with a 6 p.m. match at R-S Central.
