Designed by Asheville architect Ronald Greene, the Tryon Elementary main building was completed in September 1923. 

Originally, the school housed grades 1 through 11. There was no kindergarten or 12th grade. The historic structure has been an integral part of the education of young students from the Tryon area for 100 years. Today, it is the center of learning for children in preschool and from kindergarten to 5th grade.

According to Principal Cari Maneen, the school has multiple special events to commemorate the school’s golden anniversary. On Saturday, October 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the school is having an open house for the community. Visitors can tour the classrooms, enjoy displays of school trivia or just come reminisce about school days past. 

The Polk County Community Foundation is providing the funding for the Centennial Celebration open house. In addition, the school has received grant funding from the Crandall Foundation for a sensory garden at the school designated as ‘Centennial Park’.
