Flynn III follows in father’s footsteps to hold public office as city attorney

 

LANDRUM—On Tuesday, September 12,  Landrum City Council approved a motion to appoint a new city attorney. 

Larry Flynn, Jr. acted as Landrum City Attorney for more than 15 years, unfortunately passing away on August 10 of this year. City Manager Rich Caplan called Flynn “a long-time friend of Landrum, and extremely knowledgeable,” and wanted to continue the relationship by appointing Larry’s son, Lawrence, as the new City Attorney.

Lawrence Flynn III worked with his father in his father’s last decade, at the Pope-Flynn group, a law firm focusing on municipal bond projects. The firm began as a self-proclaimed “jack of all trades,” but evolved into representing city governments all over Spartanburg County. 

“He was an incredible guy. He loved being a lawyer and he did it for a long time,” said Flynn of his father. “There’s something to say about doing what you love, and he certainly did. It carved out a niche of municipal work, that I’ve definitely taken to it.”

A native of Spartanburg and a graduate of Duke University, as well as the University of South Carolina School of Law, Flynn’s practice serves as local attorney office to a number of municipalities, counties and special purpose districts. Flynn himself has already been named the attorney for the cities of Camden, Lawrence and Vance before being appointed to Landrum.

“I’m really excited about it and I think that bringing a new perspective to the city is always beneficial,” said Flynn of being appointed as the new Landrum City Attorney. “But also having the continuity of the firm involved in the community is something that makes me proud as a son.”

The motion to appoint Lawrence Flynn III as Landrum City Attorney was passed unanimously.
