Undefeated Patton needed double overtime Monday to finally outlast Polk County 4-3 in a Mountain Foothills 7 Conference matchup in Morganton.

The Panthers improved to 8-0-2 overall, with the Wolverines falling to 3-2-2 in the conference opener for both teams.

Looking to free its speedy front line for one-on-one opportunities, Patton peppered Polk County early with long balls into the Wolverines’ end of the field. Polk’s defense and goalkeeper Cade Bright held firm until the Panthers finally found the net for a 1-0 lead.

Polk, though, answered as James Purtill scored off a free kick, evening the score at 1-1, where it stayed at the half.

The teams swapped goals in the second half, with Nate Martinez and Sebastian Azar scoring for the Wolverines to send the game into overtime.

Late in the second extra period, the Wolverines were whistled for a hand ball in the penalty area. That provided a penalty kick to Patton, which the Panthers converted for the win.

Bright finished with 21 saves in the match for Polk County.

The Wolverines return home Wednesday, continuing MF7 play in hosting Hendersonville. The varsity match is set to start at 6:45 p.m. and will be streamed live on NFHS Network.
