1956 US Olympic Equestrian team has Tryon roots

TRYON—The Tryon History Museum’s equestrian exhibit is being reimagined by a local student, as the museum is planning its upcoming move to N. Trade St.

Maren Daniels was looking for a meaningful internship to help fulfill her graduate degree requirements at the University of Southern California. At the same time, the Tryon History Museum was looking for an intern to help them reimagine many of their existing exhibits.

Only in Tryon would these two things converge within a one-mile radius. Museum board member Wanda May just happened to hear about Maren and quickly lined her up for the project.

The 1956 US Olympic Equestrian Team trained right here in Tryon before heading to Stockholm for the games. The project will include researching the 1956 Olympics, looking for artifacts and memorabilia, interviewing local horsemen and women about equestrian training, finding the history of The Cotton Patch Patch Farm and actually assembling the final exhibit.

Daniels is halfway through her master’s degree work. She plans to work as an archivist. She was also a pony club rider during high school and college. That and her interest in history make her the ideal candidate for the project.
