The North Carolina Department of Transportation issued a release stating that they closed the 53-year-old bridge last week and formed a detour route for events at the Tryon International Equestrian Center. The 8.5-mile detour runs along Sandy Plains, Pea Ridge and John Shehan roads, and will remain in in place until the work is finished in November of this year.

NCDOT crews plan to make upgrades to three deteriorating beams, which will restore bridge weight limits to 15 tons for single vehicles and 18 tons for tractor-trailers.

The NCDOT stated that it inspects and performs maintenance on more than 18,000 structures across the state, including over 110 bridges in Polk County.
