Polk County’s volleyball team is beginning to garner some statewide attention – and showed why Tuesday.
The Wolverines rolled to a sweep of R-S Central, downing the Hilltoppers 25-3, 25-4, 25-18 in a Mountain Foothills 7 Conference match at Polk.
Polk County improved to 9-0 overall, 3-0 in league play. The Wolverines also moved into the top 25 of HighSchoolOT.com’s statewide volleyball rankings, entering the list at No. 24. Brevard, at No. 18, is the only other Western North Carolina squad in the rankings, which are led by Chapel Hill, Reagan and Cardinal Gibbons.
R-S Central dropped to 2-6 overall, 0-3 in MF7 matches.
The Wolverines dominated the first two sets, racing to huge leads in each, including a 22-1 advantage in the second set. Morgan Yoder finished with 18 kills for Polk, with Ada Kelley adding seven kills and six digs.
Lexi Beiler had four kills while Sophia Overholt had four kills and 13 digs. Overholt moved past 500 career kills in the match, joining Yoder, who also recently surpassed that figure.
Mia Bradley had three kills, five aces and four digs. Elena Carroll had 13 digs, with Zaelea Eller recording 19 assists and Charley Dusenbury posting 11 assists.
Polk County will step out of non-conference play on Wednesday and Thursday, hosting Crest (6-2) on Wednesday before facing West Henderson (6-5) on Thursday. Both matches are slated to start at 5:30 p.m. and will also be streamed live on NFHS Network.
