Landrum– On Friday, August 25, 2023, Margaret Lou McIntyre Horton, 91, passed away at home surrounded by her family. A native of Polk County, NC, she was born September 25, 1931, to the late Marvin Elphus McIntyre and Margaret Leona Durham McIntyre. After attending Tryon High School, she worked in the textile industry and married the boy-next-door, the love of her life, John Allen Horton in April 1951. They settled in Landrum where their two daughters took center stage, surrounded by the safe havens of home life, school activities, church (Peniel Baptist and later First Baptist of Landrum), and their big, extended families.

Margaret was the consummate homemaker. She took great joy in cooking and in crafting her children’s clothes, from suits to prom dresses – they were works of art. Her love for children led her, in her later years, to care for a favored few in her home. Eventually, she joined her husband in the workforce and retired from SC Elastic, just in time, to give her grandsons the childcare, love, and attention that only a grandmother can give. She was a best friend, a confidant, and a source of Godly wisdom. She never lost her wry wit, unabridged clarity, or open smile.

In addition to her beloved husband of 72 years, she is survived by two daughters, Renetta Horton-Greene (Jim), Landrum, SC; and Sandra Bryson (Tim), Fair Play, SC; and five grandchildren, Jay Greene (Dana), Cummings GA; Jonathon Greene, Erie, PA; Alex Greene, Landrum, SC; Haley (Nate) and Matthew Bryson, Greenville, SC; one brother, Harold McIntyre (Jimmie Ann), Campobello, SC; and two sisters, Hazel Splawn, Columbus, NC; and Jane Haynes, Iva, SC. She is predeceased by her parents and one sister, Joyce Horton, Columbus, NC.
